Trial has started for a Virginia Beach man accused in the death of an 8-year-old boy. WAVY-TV says 39-year-old Richard Humbert faces 10 years in prison if convicted. He's accused of hitting the boy with his car October 3 then leaving the scene of the accident. The trial is expected to last all week.

A man who plays a large role in getting some of the area's biggest sporting events off the ground is stepping down. Sports Backers Executive Director Jon Lugbill announced last week he plans to retire next June. He has been with the organization for over 30 years. Lugbill has helped plan the Richmond Marathon and other events. He says he's so grateful he had the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and make active living a part of our region's DNA. Sports Backers has formed a search committee to find Lugbill's replacement.

The Pentagon is sending a Norfolk-based aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean Sea. The USS Harry S. Truman was among the ships that departed from Naval Station Norfolk yesterday for a regularly scheduled deployment. Other ships in the carrier strike group are expected to leave Norfolk today and tomorrow. The Pentagon is monitoring the rising violence between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon and could use the carrier group as a deterrent in hopes of avoiding an all-out war in the region.
