A northern Virginia boy's basketball coach has been suspended for allegedly using ineligible players. The principal of Thomas Edison High School sent a letter to parents saying the coach let athletes who didn't attend the school play in a tournament last summer. The varsity coach has been suspended for the rest of the school year following an investigation. The school will also implement a plan to increase oversight of off-season athletic activities.
Virginia's top Republican lawmakers are supporting a pair of bills designed to prevent transgender participation in school sports. Bills introduced in the House and Senate would require that participation in boy's or girl's sports be limited to a student's biological sex at birth. The bills would expressly prohibit students who were born male from competing in girl's sports. The governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general all expressed support for the bills yesterday, saying they want to protect women from unfair competition in their chosen sports.
