Police announced yesterday that the body of 12-year-old Juan Sebastian Mejia Acevedo was found at the bottom of a local pond. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause and manner of the child's death. Police originally believed the child might have been abducted, but now think that Acevedo may have fallen through the ice on the pond while walking to a friend's house. The claim from his parents that they reportedly received ransom demands on WhatsApp has not been addressed.
Richmond's superintendent wants to reassure students worried about immigration raids on campus. Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras said yesterday the district will do everything humanly possible to protect students and keep them safe. He also says law enforcement officers will be welcome on school grounds as long as they're there to enhance safety. He adds, though, the minute that changes, so will the district's stance. Richmond Mayor Dr. Danny Avula says police officers won't be doing the work of deportation and will ensure folks in the city are safe and thriving.
