The USDA's inspector general is planning an internal investigation into the agency's response to a listeria outbreak at a Boar's Head plant in Virginia. Connecticut Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal announced the investigation into the Jarratt, Virginia plant yesterday. Blumenthal says the plant should have been closed before the outbreak, citing serious violations found by state inspectors during previous visits. Production was shut down last month after at least ten people died after eating products made at the plant. Blumenthal called the failure to close the plant "an abject failure to protect consumers."  
 
 
Grayson County Public Schools in Virginia reopened after being closed due to damages caused by Hurricane Helene.

The annual Medicare open enrollment period begins today giving current enrollees the opportunity to join parts of the health care program and make changes to existing coverage. Kathy Sarmiento with the Alliance for Aging says as of today you can change your insurance if you have Medicare.
