The USDA's inspector general is planning an internal investigation into the agency's response to a listeria outbreak at a Boar's Head plant in Virginia. Connecticut Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal announced the investigation into the Jarratt, Virginia plant yesterday. Blumenthal says the plant should have been closed before the outbreak, citing serious violations found by state inspectors during previous visits. Production was shut down last month after at least ten people died after eating products made at the plant. Blumenthal called the failure to close the plant "an abject failure to protect consumers."
