A man is dead after an apartment fire in southwest Virginia. Crews were called to the 200 block of Fayette Street in Martinsville around 2 a.m. yesterday. Firefighters worked for five hours to control the fire, which destroyed one building and damaged several others. The fire chief says a partial collapse kept firefighters from reaching the elderly man who died in the fire. He was later identified as 82-year-old Joe Hairston. The cause of the fire is under investigation but is thought to be accidental.

Five-hundred southwest Virginia families will enjoy a Thanksgiving feast this year thanks to a partnership between Kroger and the Virginia Tech football team. "Touchdowns for Turkeys" is in its sixth year, with Kroger donating ten turkeys for every touchdown the Hokies score during the season. Members of the football team got together yesterday to package Thanksgiving meal kits that will be given to Feeding Southwest Virginia for distribution ahead of the holiday. The Hokies are gearing up for another big challenge this Saturday, taking on UVA in Blacksburg.
