Democrat Tim Kaine will return to the U.S. Senate for a third term. Unofficial results from yesterday's election show Kaine defeating Republican opponent Hung Cao [[ cow ]]. Kaine took the stage last night with a 54 percent lead last night, encouraging voters to be patient for the final results.Preview: Cao conceded the race last night during a speech at his election watch party in Chantilly. Kaine was leading by about 300-thousand votes as of last night.
Plans to build a casino in Petersburg can move forward. Voters yesterday passed the casino referendum with almost 82 percent support. The Cordish Company previously lost two votes to build a casino in Richmond. The project also includes an entertainment venue, a hotel and a convention center. Petersburg Mayor Sam Parham says the citizens have spoken, and they are excited.
A Richmond woman recalls an awful experience while voting. Nakeisha Smith went to vote yesterday with her daughter at the Calhoun Family Investment Center in Gilpin Court. She says they got there at 6 a.m., but the door was locked, and there were no poll workers there. Once they got inside, problems continued. Smith says poll workers couldn't find her daughter's name in the system, so she was given a provisional ballot, but that ballot did not include local races, like the mayor's race. The Richmond Electoral Board met and decided to fire the precinct chief. Smith tells 8News this was the worst experience in all her years of voting.
Police are asking for help finding a woman reported missing in Prince William County. Investigators say 43-year-old Lareina Colon Rodriguez hasn't been seen since October 23rd. Police found her car in Gainesville on October 28th, but have yet to find Rodriguez. Anyone with information about her location is asked to call the Prince William County Police Department.
