The City of Roanoke is honoring the legacy of the first Black man selected as a U.S. ambassador. The city will unveil a historical marker for Edward Dudley during a ceremony today. Dudley was born in South Boston in 1911 and went on to teach school in Roanoke's Gainsboro neighborhood. After moving to New York City, Dudley received a law degree, entered politics and worked for the NAACP. He was appointed ambassador to Liberia in 1949 by President Harry Truman. He was 93-years-old when he died in 2005.
