The expansion of a sports complex in Chesterfield County is already paying off. The Shooting Star Thanksgiving Tournament drew over 200 field hockey teams to the River City Sportsplex this weekend. The complex recently grew with the addition of four lighted fields. It now has 16 turf fields, and that allowed tournament organizers to hold every game at one venue for the first time. A new paper published by doctors of Emory's Sports Cardiology Program in Georgia have found Black athletes are five times more likely to die of sudden cardiac arrest than white athletes. The paper mirrors similar studies with the same conclusion published in 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2023. The newest paper echoes previous reports that genetics may or may not explain the results of the study and calls for more research to be done. It also calls for mandating defibrillators and action plans at public gathering places.
