Richmond has a new way to contact residents in an emergency. The city announced yesterday it's launching a new emergency alert system called Richmond Ready Alerts. It'll replace the current system called CodeRed. The city says the new system is innovative, and it'll provide prompt and dependable notifications during critical incidents and emergencies. It'll be used during severe weather, fires, floods, missing persons, power outages and other crucial situations. You can sign up for the alerts by visiting RVA.gov/RichmondReadyAlerts.

The U.S. Park Police announced yesterday that most of Daingerfield Island has reopened. Gravelly Point and parts of the Mount Vernon Trail remain closed as crews connected to the crash recovery effort are working there.
The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources has opened this year's state Elk Hunt Lottery. Five lucky hunters will receive licenses to hunt bull elk in the state's Elk Management Zone. Applications will be accepted through March 31st, with winners notified by May 30th. This year's elk hunt will be held in October.
