Virginia Tech is observing the 18th anniversary of one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. Thirty-two people died and more than a dozen others were wounded when a gunman opened fire inside two campus buildings on April 16th, 2007. A wreath-laying ceremony will be held this morning on the Blacksburg campus. Governor Youngkin has also ordered flags on all state and local buildings to be lowered to half-staff today.

Autism rates are rising among school-aged children. One in 31 children are being diagnosed with autism before their eighth birthday in the U.S., according to findings from the CDC based on medical records from 2022. Reports from the CDC in 2016 had a rate of one in 54 eight-years-olds diagnosed with the disorder. The author of the report attributes the increase to improvements in detecting autism and mass awareness but no other cause was identified.
