Multiple legal complaints have been filed against the Alleghany Highlands Public School system following a carbon monoxide leak at Covington Middle School earlier this year. Roanoke attorneys representing dozens of families have requested a temporary injunction to close the school for the rest of the year and switch to virtual learning due to ongoing environmental concerns. Despite officials deeming the building safe based on recent environmental studies, WDBJ reports attorneys argue for a more conclusive identification and resolution of the issues. Parents are concerned about the health risks to students and are pushing for alternative options. A hearing is scheduled for April 23 at the Alleghany County Circuit Court, with a large turnout expected from concerned parents.

Two Virginia Republicans are joining other members of the GOP in opposing any cuts to the Medicaid program. Twelve Republicans sent a letter to party leaders in the House of Representatives on Monday. The letter said each member supports action that eliminates waste and reduces improper payments. But the group also opposed any cuts that would reduce Medicaid coverage to "vulnerable populations." First District Congressman Rob Wittman and Second District Congresswoman Jen Kiggans both signed the letter.
