Potential candidates were required to turn in their petitions to the Virginia Department of Elections by 5 p.m. yesterday. The Democratic Party announced last night that Abigail Spanberger was the only candidate to enter the governor's race and will become the party's nominee. The Republican Party also announced that Attorney General Jason Miyares will be seeking re-election to that post in November.
Richmond's mayor believes the city is on the right path to avoiding another water crisis. Mayor Danny Avula talked yesterday after the final after-action report on January's water outage was released. The report recommends some changes the city has already made. Avula says new emergency response protocols have been established, staffing standards have been upgraded, inspection protocols have been strengthened and five million dollars has been invested in critical repairs and upgrades to the water treatment plant.
The Supreme Court will determine whether Planned Parenthood can participate in Medicaid. The high court Wednesday heard arguments over the abortion provider in South Carolina at the center conservative efforts to keep Planned Parenthood from receiving public funds. South Carolina argued Planned Parenthood is not providing health care for the unborn child because it performs abortions, which the state considers "a denial of the right to life." The organization argues that choosing your own doctor is a fundamental right Congress intended to protect.
