Appalachian Power is working to restore power to thousands of Virginians after severe storms rolled through southwest and central Virginia. The utility was reporting more than 25-thousand customers without power in multiple counties last night. A funnel cloud was reported in Salem as the storm moved through the area, with high winds knocking down trees and causing damage to homes and outbuildings. Damage was also reported at a campground in Rockbridge County, where trees fell on campers, tents and vehicles. No injuries have been reported.

A woman is dead after she was hit by a car in Henrico County. It happened last night as she was walking at Brook Road and Magellan Parkway. Police say she died at the scene. The driver reported the crash and was there when officers arrived. The woman has not been identified, and no charges have been announced.

Just one in four or one quarter of Americans say a college degree is very important to get a well-paying job. A Pew Research survey says 40-percent do not believe it's important to get a degree to secure a well-paying job. Republicans were more likely than Democrats to say they think college degrees are less important than they were 20-years ago. Researchers say many have doubts about whether the high cost is worth the return on investment.
