The family of a man killed by Chesterfield Police is now suing the county and the officer who shot him. The attorney that represents Charles Byers' family recently named the county and the officer as defendants in a 35 million dollar lawsuit. The 34-year-old Byers was shot to death last year while holding a hatchet that he refused to drop. His family's attorney says Byers was mentally ill and was backing away from the officer when he was shot. Acting Police Chief Frank Carpenter wrote on Facebook yesterday that he stands by his officers actions that day. He writes the death of Mr. Byers is an outcome no one wanted, but the officers were protecting themselves and the community.

A Richmond business owner is getting a boost from loyal customers after some would-be thieves damaged his store. Tom Kirkland of Tom Kirkland Opticians spoke to CBS6 yesterday as he cleaned up from Monday's incident. Police say a stolen car was driven into the building on North 8th Street. Two people got out of the car and tried to get inside the building but couldn't and ran away. Kirkland has owned his business since 1986, and he says nothing like this has ever happened before. Some longtime customers came by to check on him, and he says the support is what's keeping him going.
