Attorney General Jason Miyares is warning Virginians about possible price gouging following a state of emergency declaration. Governor Youngkin issued the declaration yesterday due to the possibility of strong winds, heavy rains and flooding due to Tropical Storm Debby. The declaration also triggers Virginia's anti-price gouging law, which prevents suppliers from charging unreasonable prices for goods during a state of emergency. Anyone impacted by price gouging over the next 30 days is being asked to call the attorney general's office to report it.

Lawmakers and use of force experts have expressed concerns over the deadly police shooting of a mentally ill man in Chesterfield County last year. Charles Byers, who was under a temporary detention order for psychiatric treatment, was not at a hospital when he was fatally shot by a Chesterfield officer while holding a hatchet. State Delegate Debra Gardner and Senator Ghazala Hashmi are committed to addressing gaps in mental health and legal systems to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Despite new training standards developed by the Department of Criminal Justice Services, they have not been implemented in Virginia, raising concerns about the delay in improving crisis intervention training for law enforcement. Governor Glenn Youngkin's office is reviewing the regulations, with action expected in December.
