Governor Glenn Youngkin recently announced a permanent ruling with the U.S. Department of Justice, ending a 12-year settlement agreement with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The injunction aims to provide proper services to individuals with developmental disabilities in integrated community settings, independent housing, and employment options. Virginia has closed four of its five institutions for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The permanent injunction includes expectations for services, compliance monitoring, and rate studies to support individuals with developmental disabilities in living fulfilling lives in their communities. The state continues to work towards improving access to quality providers and life-changing waiver services for individuals with disabilities.
