The U.S. Forest Service has re-opened some areas in southwest Virginia after cleaning up the damage from Hurricane Helene. Parts of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest are now open in areas east of Virginia Highway 16 and south of Interstate 81. Camping areas that have re-opened include Stony Fork Campground and Cabin, Collins Cove Horse Camp and Raven Cliff Campground. Hale Lake, the Gullion Fork Fishing Ponds and the Wythe Shooting Range have also reopened. Anyone using roads and trails in the area is being told to exercise caution due to ongoing recovery and utility restoration efforts.

The calendar says October, but a local nonprofit is already thinking of Christmas. Petersburg's ThisAbility tries to help kids and adults with disabilities. They're collecting toys for their tenth annual Christmas Program. Founder and CEO Tara Sample says their goal is to collect enough toys, clothes, shoes and food for about 350 children. She tells CBS 6 seeing joy on a child's face is something very beautiful at the end of the day. You can find out more at ThisAbility.org.
