Richmond's next mayor is ready to take on what he says will be the biggest issue when he takes office. Mayor-Elect Dr. Danny Avula talked recently about his plans to address affordable housing. He says he'll propose a cap on property taxes and offer more subsidies for low-income residents. Avula also wants to address gun violence by teaching kids conflict resolution. He says a key will be identifying kids who are at high risk of perpetrating violence or being a victim and providing mental health support. Avula also tells 8News he wants to highlight the city's best features like its incredible river, great food scene, art scene and corporate partners.  
 
 
At least one school in Richmond is seeing positive results from a new cell phone policy. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School is one of three Richmond Public Schools that have already banned cell phones. The policy went into effect in January, and Principal Inell Dabney tells CBS 6 English test scores have gone up ten points since then. Come January, all RPS schools will have to comply with a state law restricting cell phone use.  
 
 
Roughly 11 percent of Americans have high cholesterol, according to a new report issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention using data from 2021 to 2023. That's not much of a change from recent years.
