A woman is facing charges after a gun was found in her son's backpack in Petersburg. Police say the gun was found yesterday at Westview Early Childhood School in the five-year-old's bookbag. The school says a teacher noticed the gun while putting papers into the bag. The teacher notified a school administrator. Police arrested the boy's mother, Brianne Lucas, for felony child neglect and reckless handling of a firearm. She is being held without bond.
Richmond's elections office is undergoing big changes.Preview: An abandoned calf is getting a new chance at life in Halifax County. Mike Lloyd of South Boston found the newborn calf in a dumpster last month and decided to take it home, though he was unsure it would survive. His family fed the calf and gave it a warm place to sleep in their backyard, helping the newborn recover from its ordeal. The Lloyds have named the three-week-old calf Katie Jo. They have already bonded with the calf and say they have no plans to give her away or sell her.
Seniors in America are paying more for healthcare than seniors in other wealthy countries according to a new study. A Commonwealth Fund survey shows about 25 percent of American seniors spent at least two-thousand dollars out of pocket on health care last year. Researchers say under five percent of seniors in France and the Netherlands spent at least two thousand dollars. Experts say due to the complexity of the American inflated drug supply chain and tax system, it is difficult to truly compare the costs without factoring in all of the differences.
