A man accused of killing a Wintergreen police officer in 2023 is pleading guilty to a charge of second-degree murder. Daniel Barmak of Maryland also pled guilty to firearm and malicious wounding charges during a hearing in Nelson County this week. Investigators say Barmak took ketamine and hallucinogenic mushrooms during a trip to Wintergreen nearly two years ago. He reportedly became violent, attacking friends and shooting Officer Chris Wagner after taking the officer's gun. Barmak will be sentenced in September.
A bill that would have allowed the possible construction of a casino in Fairfax County is apparently done for this year. The Virginia State Senate approved the bill earlier this month, sending it to the House of Delegates for consideration. But the House Appropriations Committee declined to vote on the bill yesterday, effectively killing it for the year. Democratic State Senator Scott Surovell has pushed for a casino in the Tysons area for several years. He said he was disappointed by the decision by the House committee, especially when President Trump is threatening to eliminate thousands of federal government jobs in northern Virginia.
