A man is facing murder charges after the death of an elderly woman in Roanoke. Police were called to the 21-hundred block of Yellow Mountain Road early yesterday and found the body of 80-year-old Susan B. Williams. Officers arrested 34-year-old Kurt James Davis and charged him with second-degree murder. Investigators are trying to determine why Davis allegedly attacked Williams in the hallway of her apartment complex. They don't believe Davis knew Williams before the attack.
Appalachian Power has restored power to nearly all customers in Franklin County after a week-long outage caused by severe weather conditions.Preview: Volvo is planning layoffs at its plant in the New River Valley. The company told employees of the Pulaski County plant about the layoffs on Tuesday. A spokesperson said the layoffs are necessary due to a reduction in demand in the long-haul segment of the heavy-duty truck market. Staff reductions will begin sometime in April.
President Trump has appointed the governors of Virginia and Maryland to his Council of Governors. The White House announced yesterday that Virginia Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin will be co-chair of the ten-member group along with North Carolina Democratic Governor Josh Stein. The bipartisan group will also include Maryland Democratic Governor Wes Moore. The panel was established in 2010 and helps coordinate disaster response, National Guard operations and other activities between states.
