A recent study analyzing 12.6 million butterfly sightings in the United States over the past two decades reveals a concerning trend: butterfly populations have declined by 22% on average since 2000. The decline was observed across all regions and species, with only 3% of species showing an increase in numbers. Factors such as habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change are believed to be driving these declines, according to NPR. To help mitigate the effects, researchers suggest actions like planting pollinator-friendly plants in backyards to provide food and nectar for butterflies and other insects.
