Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares is helping to lead the push to persuade the Supreme Court to allow the deportations of dangerous gang members. Miyares is at the front of a coalition made up of half of the country's top AGs asking the high court to lift a restraining order on deportations. Miyares has a vested interest in seeing the order lifted after one of the top leaders of the MS-13 gang was arrested in Dale City last week. Several other members of MS-13 and the dangerous TdA gang from Venezuela were also rounded up recently across the DMV, including in Northern Virginia. All were known to be involved in ongoing criminal activities.
Politicians wanting to run for the state's top job have only a few days to get on the ballot.Preview: Richmond may take steps to discourage the use of plastic bags. The city council this month is expected to discuss a five cent plastic bag tax. The goal is to reduce landfill space. There's also concern that plastic bags clog drains. The city expects the tax will generate 400-thousand dollars a year. The city's Office of Sustainability Manager tells 12 On Your Side the money would be used for environmental cleanups and other needs.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin will give this year's commencement speech at Liberty University. The university will hold its 52nd commencement ceremony on May 9th. Degree presentation ceremonies will be held in smaller groups on May 8th, 9th and 10th. Youngkin called the invitation a tremendous honor and said he looked forward to celebrating the event with students, families and the entire Liberty community.
