Over 90 thousand Virginians work for the federal government according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Saint Louis and it's unclear how and if recent Supreme Court rulings will effect them. On Friday, the court ruled a legal doctrine known as the Chevron deference as unconstitutional because it instructed the judicial branch of judges to defer to hired government employees when the law is ambiguous. A day before the court ruled that the SEC's use of internal administrative courts to try civil fraud cases, again operated by hired government employees instead of the constitutionally formed judicial branch of government, was unconstitutional. A third case still to be decided could weaken regulatory statutes of limitation and give people who oppose a federal action taken by government officials and employees more time to sue. Critics say these moves could weaken the agencies. Supporters say it puts power back into the hands of those affected by American voters and where the constitution originally intended.
