An 8-year-old girl was killed in a crash involving a horse-drawn buggy in Cumberland County earlier this week. The buggy was struck from behind by a Ford F-250, causing everyone in the buggy to be ejected. The driver of the carriage and several other passengers were seriously injured and taken to the hospital. WRIC reports the driver of the F-250, Mack H. Robinson, was not injured, and charges are pending. The incident is still under investigation by Virginia State Police.
Forecasters are warning of "life-threatening" heat conditions across the Eastern U.S. today. The National Weather Service says the combination of heat and high humidity will continue to produce life-threatening conditions as "widespread record high minimum temperatures" are forecast this morning across the East and the Deep South.
A long-planned project to build an interstate in western Virginia is about to be tabled by the state.Preview: The Virginia Department of Education will hold eight meetings around the state to get public input on a plan to ban cellphone use in classrooms. The series of Commonwealth Conversations will begin in Manassas tomorrow. Meetings will be held in Virginia Beach, Fredericksburg, Waynesboro, Roanoke, Abingdon, Keysville and Midlothian over the next three weeks.
