A broken pipe may have leaked sewage into the James River for weeks before a swim advisory was put into place. Tom Dunlap, with the James River Association tells CBS6 the contamination, that started at the beginning of July, is likely due to heavy rains, a broken city pipe, and an increase in sewage leakage from the city's combined sewer overflow system.

The Virginia Department of Health says they were notified of the sewage leak July 16th and issued the swim advisory the next day. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported the leak started July 2nd with the city notifying the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality within 24 hours. DEQ blames the delay in notifying VDH on the crowdstrike outage that happened July 19th. The James River Association confirms the high levels of E. Coli concentration in the James River from the 14th Street takeout steps to Rockett's Landing. Mayor Levar Stoney says a permanent fix could could cost around $650 million dollars and he's calling for state assistance to address the issue.

There's a new but temporary leader in charge of Hanover County schools. The school board yesterday named Dr. Lisa Pennycuff as acting superintendent. She replaces Michael Gill who announced last week that he's resigning after a decade in the district. Pennycuff will take over in Hanover County August 5th.
