Richmond PD releases its annual crime reports showing drops in hard crime. Offcials reported a 5% decrease in violent crime in 2024 compared to 2023, with reductions in murders and rapes. Non-fatal shootings increased by 5%, while accidental shootings also rose. Operation Safe Summer, an initiative to reduce violent crime, saw a decrease in incidents in 2024.  
WRIC reports that property crime decreased overall, but there was a notable increase in commercial burglary incidents.  
 
Averett University continues to face financial constraints, including staff furloughs and the elimination of retirement savings matches.

Lawmakers going to bat again over fish stuy funding. A budget amendment is being considered by the Virginia General Assembly to fund a three-year study of Atlantic menhaden in Virginia's portion of the Chesapeake Bay. Sportfishing, commercial fishing, and conservation groups have raised concerns about a decline in menhaden numbers in the Chesapeake, impacting fish and wildlife species. 10 On Your Side reports that while industrial fishing company Omega Protein supports the study, critics argue that politics are hindering environmental policy and the need for localized research on menhaden in the Chesapeake.
