More preschoolers are showing up with disabilities and emotional needs in Hanover County, requiring additional care and putting stress on staff. The Department of Public Works says several events will be held this entire week dedicated to showcasing how the department impacts the community. A Touch-A-Truck event will be held Wednesday, an award ceremony and luncheon will be held Thursday, and a Speed Management Symposium will also be held Thursday. Free live music will be featured on Friday at Main Street Station.
A Fairfax County teen is preparing for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Eighth grader Nikita Ramakrishnan is headed to Maryland to compete in the 100th edition of the spelling bee. She says she studies several hours a day by herself and with family to prepare for the competition. Nikita won the 2025 Fairfax County Spelling Bee this March, and says she's hopeful to do well at Scripps. She'll be competing against more than 240 students from around the country. The spelling bee will take place May 27th through the 29th at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center at National Harbor, Maryland.
